BRIEF HISTORY
In 1982, Higher Education in Greece Underwent a radical reform in all spheres, including the role of the University, its structural organisation, the structure and content of the curricula, etc. Part of this change involved the upgrading of professional preparation of Physical Education teachers at the University level. Thus, Departments of Physical Education and Sport Science were established in three Universities, namely, in the University of Athens, the University of Thessaloniki and the University of Thrace. ( A new Department of Physical Education and Sport Science has been established recently in the University of Thessaly). These Departments do not belong to any Faculty; they are independent and have the status of faculty.
This institutional change established Sport Science in Greece for the first time on its own feet, recognised its autonomy as a science, created opportunities for research and signalied a new perspective for its development. At this stage, Sport Science must not be judged by its present status but rather by its future tutorial.

LABORATORIES
The Department of Physical Education and Sport Science is actively engaged in exercise/sport research. Laboratories in Ergophysiology, Sport Biomechanics, Sport Medicine, Motor Behavior-Sport Psychology, Adapted Physical Activity and Physiotherapy are very active in research. Computers are available to student use in all laboratories and the Faculty has its own on-line terminal to the Universitys mainframe computers.
The Laboratories have a range of state of-the-art equipment, including: various mechanically and electronically braked cycle ergometers, a remote controlled electronically driven treadmill, a computer-controlled metabolic gas analyzer, a hydrostatic weighing tank, telemetered heart rate monitors, various anthropometric equipment, analysers for blood lactate, glucose, total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, a computerised instrumentation for muscle function assessment, a three-dimensional video analysis system, sport psychology and psychomotor assessment devices, and other computerised equipment to measure kinetic and kinematic analysis of movement
NATURE OF STUDIES
The Faculty degree qualifies graduates to teach Physical Education in Primary and Secondary Education, to work as trainers and coaches, and to seek other career opportunities for which the knowledge and skills developed during the four year study programme are necessary.
The degree is designed to provide a basis for those who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in areas related to Physical Education and Sport Sciences.
All undergraduate courses are conducted in Greek.
THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM
The duration of the undergraduate programme is four years of study, divided into eight semesters. A total of 140 credits is required for the completion of the programme. Students are assessed by coursework and by examinations throught the semester and also at the end of each semester in February and in June.
THE PRE-SPECIALISATION PROGRAMME
All students follow a common programme, comprising compulsory and elective courses, for the first three years of study (six semesters). The studies are not organised in years; each student is allowed to choose courses and to design his/her own personal course programme (the normal load is about 18 credits per semester), subject to approval of the academic staff to ensure that it meets the Faculty requirements.
THE SPECIALISATION PROGRAMME
Upon completion of the common three year programme, students are required to choose their area of concentration, that is, specialisation in one of the Olympic sports or other areas such as: Folk Dancing, Adapted Physical Education, and Sport for All. All students, during their fourth year, are offered opportunities for more advanced study in the area they have chosen to focus on. A certificate of specialisation ia awarded together with their degree.
POSTGRADUATE STUDIES
The Faculty offers a M.A. degree and a Ph.D. in Biology of Physical Activity. The Masters degree requires two (2) years of study and the Ph.D. a minimum of three (3) years of study and research beyond the Masters degree.
The Faculty offers also a Ph.D. Degree by research and thesis in various areas related to Physical Education and Sport Science such as:
- Sport Psychology
- Sport Sociology
- Sport Philosophy
- Sport History
- Sport Pedagogy
- Sport Coaching
AREAS OF RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY
Members of the Department of Sport Medicine and Biology of Physical Activity are involved in research projects concerning the following: study of genetic aspects of human performance, physical performance under extreme environmental conditions (heat, cold, altitude), evaluation of physical parameters in athletes, and talent in sport. Other department members are involved in research concerning the biomechanics of human movement (sport biomechanics, musculoskeletal modeling/muscle mechanics, and strength development). Finally, research is being conducted concerning sports injuries and rehabilitation.
Members of the Department of Social-Behavioral Sciences are involved in various research projects such as the examination of the human motor skill acquisition, the study of sport anxiety and sport confidence, the examination of various worry-related aspects of competitive performance and behavior, and various mental training and psychological intervention strategies. Research also is undertaken to elucidate the effect of exercise on the health and well-being on people with disabilities. Research in teacher education is led by other Department members. Specifically, their research interests include focus on both prospective teachers and teacher educators, primarily from a naturalistic perspective. Finally, other Department members are involved in research concerning the techniques which will allow the students to conceive, organise, plan and manage projects in sport.
Members of the Department of Science of Sport Coaching are involved in various research areas relevant to the study of Sport Coaching in individual and team sports.
CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS
Every year distinguished scholars are invited from abroad to address students and staff. Lectures, seminars and workshops are organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Secretariat of Sport to stimulate and promote the exchange of ideas and experiences in academic and cultural matters.
Conferences, symposia and colloquia, usually held in English and organised by faculty members, provide opportunities for closer contact between our students and staff, and professionals in related fields of expertise from other academic institutions abroad.
A variety of other social and cultural events involve the student body. As Groups of students, assisted by Faculty members, take the initiative to organize intramural games.
STUDENT AND STAFF EUROPEAN MOBILITY PROGRAMMES
Faculty members are responsible for eleven bilateral agreements with other universities in country-members of the EU. They coordinate the exchange of students but also of staff moving from and to the University of Athens, through the SOCRATES/ERASMUS mobility programme.
